The back plate is an integral component of the firearm. Located at the rear of the receiver assembly held in place by the back plate latch and back plate latch lock, the M2HB back plate assembly houses a number of critical components while also serving to hold the driving spring rod assembly in place. Among the critical components found within the back plate are the buffer plate and disks, the bolt latch release and the trigger. Additionally, the back plate houses the firearms grips, which allow operators to maneuver the firearm.
